Can crypto/alts survive as a form of legalized video game gambling?

Ive been thinking about the "value" of alts and what the end game is for some of these coins. Why do they exist? How do they reach their potential? There is no goal like there is for penny stock companies (to produce a profit).

But does it matter? Can this space simply survive as a place where people participate in a highly simplified version of trading that is in essence a huge video game where you can actually make money?

New coins are just characters and we all play this game of trying to outsmart each other. Its fun, and we may even make some money.

Is that viable and sustainable model?
