Why does your cryptocurrency have value?

I've been active in this space for the majority of this year, I've been a bull on cryptocurrency through and through, and yet the price swings of Bitcoin over the past four days have shook my beliefs. There are currently 1338 cryptocurrencies listed on CMC. Why? Almost every one of these has gained value in the last year. Why? Bitcoin, the first mainstream cryptocurrency, is still the top dog in market cap. Why? I want to live in a world where I am able to freely transact in a digital currency that is decentralized, secure, and infinitely scalable, most of us here do, but what currency will this be? Ten years from now, I believe blockchain technology will have already greatly affected and entrenched itself into the corporate retail and financial spheres. Major banks and corporations are already seeing the cost- and time-saving benefits made possible by their adoption of projects like Ripple and OmiseGO. Product distribution chains are seeing the same benefits through projec

Please newbies, check the user history first

This post goes to all of you who’ve been around for about a month, weeks, days or even hours. Ok, so after reading and hearing about this digital money thingy that magically grows on its own making everyone rich overnight called Bitcoin and confirming you don’t have to buy a full coin for like $16,000, you’ve decided you want in. You setup your Coinbase account, gave almost all your personal and banking info, plus a photo, your ID and your credit card to a complete stranger and bought a fraction of something you barely understand hoping it will somehow turn your hard earned money into a fortune someday. But it looks like you’re going nowhere, because as incredibly fast as BTC grows, right now it would need to go from around $16,000 to $32,000 just to turn your $300 investment into $600 and that’s far from the huge profits you thought you’d be making in a few months. So... you read there’s this other thing called Alternative Crypto Coins or Altcoins for short, and people say many of

I mistakenly transferred BCH to a BTC address, that almost certainly doesn't have a wallet attached to it. Anything I can do?

I was doing a little bit of late night trading after a few glasses of wine - action 1 / mistake 1 I transferred some of my Bitcoin, held locally to a trading exchange, for future use - action 2 Shortly after, I also decided to purchase some Bitcoin Cash, and wanted to transfer that from the trading exchange, to my locally held wallet - action 3 / mistake 2 The mistake I made was that my stupid ass was not paying proper attention, and I used my trading exchange's account BTC address I had used in action 2 for the "Recipient's" address, instead of my local BCH wallet's address. The damn UI of the BCH wallet doesn't let you select, and copy the address, it only has a "Click here to copy address button", so I hadn't noticed nothing had copied / my clipboard hadn't updated. Now, I have access to the transaction information, and the recipient address via blockchair.com, and I can see that the transfer to it is the first time it's had an

CLAIM TO CHANGELLY: Losing money/time because of bad information about MEMO use in STR (XLM) transaction

I don't want to sound arrogant, but I'm worried about me, the people that have already fallen and all the people who may fall in the same thing. Here's the problem: I did not use the MEMO in a sell transaction (STR TO BTC) BECAUSE the FAQs of Changelly ( www.changelly.com ) just names that it is used for STEEM/XEM/RIPPLE transactions, and NOT STR (XLM): http://ift.tt/2yTAFR2 So the payment is freezed; my Changelly Account is still waiting for it. And I'm losing time and money because of a bad explained information by Changelly, where everyone could fall and lose. I already sent a note to support with transaction ID 8 hours ago, but they haven't even seen it. ¿Could someone help us please? submitted by /u/GonzaloCamps [link] [comments] Read More

ELI5 selling on exchange (polo) and open orders

Briefly, I had (have?) nem. Sold yesterday market was moving down. Order still shows as open in polo. Still showing as nem in balances. From reading I understand that the market doesn't buy, other people do. I don't understand then how coins are ever sold in a falling market because the price when I hit sell will then be forever higher than the current price (if it never goes that high again), does everyones orders just remain open? So now am unsure what am meant to do, cancel order when sold was hit at a good price and is lower now, keep the order open but it may never gets filled etc? Question about trading in/out of fiat vs in/out of BTC

Hello everyone, I hope I'm posting in the right sub for my question. I'm hoping you can clear up a question I have regarding trading, so thanks for your advice! If I'm trading BTC with alt coins, (LTC/BTC, XMR/BTC, etc), is it possible for the value of BTC to drop enough to where I end up cashing out to fiat with less than what I put in? I don't know if this makes sense so let me illustrate. I have $100, and trade BTC/USD. I make $10 and cash out back to USD. Now let's say I have $100 worth of BTC (converted from USD), and make $10 trading a pair like LTC/BTC. I would like to convert it back into USD. Is it possible for me to end up with less than $110 if BTC drops? Let's say at the time I try to trade BTC back to USD, and I find BTC/USD has dropped with quite a correction. I used to have $100 worth of BTC but now the USD trade value is $90. Is this possible or does the market correct for this between multiple coin/currency pairs? Does this make sense? I&#

Cryrpo Bubbles

I'm tired of hearing and reading all this talk and speculation about crytpos being a bubble waiting to burst. What if crypto is actually the pin, not the bubble? This is a question a close friend of mine has recently asked. I love the thought it causes in some people. Most go on their way and play along with anciet and outdated fiat currency ideals; but it's fun to watch those at the rabbit hole edge enter and learn about a new world. Is this a solid trading strategy

Assuming that when BTC vs USD goes up, generally most altcoins vs BTC goes down. So when BTC vs USD goes up, I'll trade that. When it starts to go on a bear run, I'll short it and buy into an alt that I now expect to go up vs BTC. Then when the alt vs BTC ends its bull run and gets bearish, I'll sell it all for BTC and go back to trading BTC vs USD while also buying more BTC with USD. I guess this is with the aim to make more BTC, not fiat. Does it sound reasonable. I still have some confusion about how to trade alts considering they're almost always paired with BTC. submitted by /u/raymanh [link] [comments] Read More

Thoughts on why USDT is sitting at $1.03

The price of a Tether has been comfortably above it's supposed $1 anchor for the past few days, even with the big pump in BTC (and now other major Alts). I know the price of USDT is fluid, normally having a negatively correlated relationship with Bitcoin.... and so I find this valuation strange at this point. Anyone have any thoughts on this? How to implement a DCA strategy for buying Altcoins with BTC?

I'm currently using Dollar Cost Averaging as my Crypto investment strategy across the big 3 (BTC, LTC & ETH). I'd like to allocate a small portion of my portfolio to a small number of other coins that I've researched and I think have a lot of potential and continue to slowly increase my holdings by a set amount each month with DCA. It seems like the best way to purchase Altcoins is by buying BTC in local fiat (AUD), transferring to Bittrex and then purchasing using a BTC-Altcoin trading pair. I'm cautious of buying a lump sum of BTC and transferring to Bittrex in the event that the price decreases significantly. It seems as though you double-expose yourself here as (I think) BTC declining in value reduces your buying power plus the regular risk of the coin being purchased decreasing in value. Am I missing something or overthinking it here? What's your recommendation for implementing a DCA strategy for buying Altcoins with BTC? submitted by /u/rheotron
