ELI5: 51% Blockchain Concept

Okay, I have a good grasp of Bitcoin and Ethereum, but I'm just a little confused on the 51% overturn concept. Or something like that. I know you need a majority for transactions or something like that. Someone help, I just don't get what this "you would have to convince 51% of the chain to go forward." Sorry, I'm sure I sound super ambiguous, that little part, the wording I've read is confusing to me. Plshlpburh
