Noob question about bittrex and altcoins

So I've bought some ripple and btc recently but I'm looking about getting into altcoins for some long term. I just want to know how bittrex works. Say I buy a coin with not much volume like bit bay(I don't know if it's OK to compare it to stocks). Can I directly exchange back to btc when I decide to sell or do I have to wait for someone to buy it like stocks? Any insight is helpful about exchanging on bittrex. And I'm looking in investing in swt, bitbay, strat, and maybe sia. Advice is always helpful. Thanks fellow redditors!!!
