Why are most coins up on coinmarket websites but down on exchanges?

Sorry for the noobish question guys but im just doing my research before I invest any real money. Just a quick question. On Coingecko this morning most of the main coins are up a good amount, however on poloniex those same coins on btc pairs are all down. Why is this?
