Anyone familiar with GridCoin care to share where the money comes from?

Hello guys. I'm looking to understand and compare the descentralized, distributed computing market, ie., the market where SONM, GridCoin, IEXEC and Golem are inserted.

One of the big advantages of GridCoin, as it's being said, is that, apparently, work distributors on BOINC don't pay GRC for the volunteers working with their computing power. Instead, the Gridcoin network distributes rewards to volunteers on their behalf.

However, where does this money come from?

And how is Gridcoin different from the actual BOINC, as this is already a distributed way of providing computing power? I'm sorry if these are silly questions, but I don't see where the blockchain adds here.
