Buying smaller coins

Hey, all!

I am new to the scene and have been doing research for the past week and I'm feeling ready to buy! The only problem is that I cannot figure out how to go about purchasing smaller coins such as ICN or XVG. So far I have figured that for ICN it is required for me to purchase BTC using cash and then putting it in a wallet and then importing that BTC into Kraken and exchanging for ICN? Is that really the only way or is there a simpler way? It just seems like there would be a huge number of fees just to purchase ICN and the same for XVG.

Any help or guidance is extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance.
