Is Coinbase ok for a small investor or what is a better alternative?

I've been following it for a good while and now I'm ready to invest in some crypto currencies. About 5k. I like Coinbase but I have heard some bad things. I plan to buy and hold for the medium to long term. Also concerned about their fees.

I'm in Ireland so what alternatives should I look into?
