How legit are fears of Monero getting outlawed in the future?

I'm new to this sub, and have been debating buying eth vs xmr (skipping btc because I think I've missed most of its boom, so would rather avoid for now).

Searching through this forum I came across multiple people talking about xmr getting outlawed due to its excess focus on privacy. Is this a possibility? I remember BTC being seen the same way a few years ago, no government outlawed btc. So why monero?
