QUESTION: Why do most cryptocurrencies have sudden massive surges in a matter of minutes?

I'm kinda new to the cryptomarket and every time I look at the charts of tokens that are sort of in the mid cap range, there are massive jumps in token prices, and they occur in just minutes, what do these series of influxes mean? Does it mean there are people placing large orders on these tokens? Or is it more along the lines of market manipulation?
