Coins not tied to BTC

While I fully grasp why so many coins are tied to the ebb and flow of BTC's value I'm wondering if there are any coins that are not and if so why not.

My understanding of why they are tied to BTC would seem to indicate that every coin would be. Can someone offer an explanation of how a coin could even move away from this and be completely independent?
