Question about backups

I'm new to cryptocurrency and I plan to invest a small amount of money. Tutorials on how to set up a wallet look pretty straightforward, but I don't think I really understand in what way currencies are stored. For instance, is it just the balance of your account/adress (in which case, how would an offline backup of that work?)

I tried searching how to make a backup, but couldn't find how for instance one would actually restore it. Could someone explain where the currency itself is stored, and how to make a backup of it?
