USE OF BOTS ON EXCHANGES

Sorry if this has been covered before, but im noticing that every order i put in that is just .01 higher than the lowest bid, the new lowest bid is .01 higher than my order. almost as if a bot is auto updating so it may get its order filled in line before mine. This doesnt always get in the way, but sometimes it does. The other "persons" order gets filled, then the price will jump shortly after the back fill leaving me with less coin chasing the bull run. ANY THOUGHTS? how do people use them? are they safe? is it a software that is installed? does it integrate with other software? any info will help, as im becoming a bit more of a novice investor rather than a total noob. (been playing with cryptos for about 2 years now)
