Why aren't coins buying each other out?

For example, why didn't bitcoin just buyout ethereum when ether was young? Or litecoin? Were offers made and rejected? Does this happen? Why or why not? MySpace was sold by its original creators in 2005. Other companies get sold all the time also. Just curious.
