What the hell is going on with Metal (BTC-MTL) on Bittrex?

The volume spiked since yesterday to several times higher than the normally-most-popular currency pairs (like ETH or even ANS at its recent peak). There was really weird/erratic trading behavior that feels like broken trading bots. Anyone know anything?
