What caused BTC, ETH, LTC, etc. to make such massive leaps in price?

I am relatively knew to the crypto game, and the best way I have seen so far to make a lot of money, besides day-trading, is getting in on a coin early. Therefore, I am curious what sings / factors to look for when looking a purchasing a coin early on. For example, I know that LTC was at pennies and is now at $42. What are the major steps that make this happen?
