How come I can't do margin trading on most altcoins?

It's cool that Poloniex supports eleven coins, but how come they don't do more? When they have a coin / asset on their exchange, is it technically difficult for them to enable margin trading?

And how come no one else supports many currencies for margin lending? It seems like a gap in the market, but maybe I'm unusual in wanting to open long / short positions with leverage on e.g. REP, STEEM, GNT.
