Is it better to use Jaxx to convert ETH to other currencies or to buy them on an exchange?

Hello, I'm a bit of a noob looking for some quick advice. I have some ether in a jaxx wallet as well as poloniex. I'm thinking of buying some other coins soon (litecoin, golem etc.) is it better to just use Jaxx to convert from the ether I have or to purchase on an exchange like poloniex?

Any help or tips are greatly appreciated
