Where does the volume of exchange come ?

I'm a bit confused about that part of trading (im fairly new). Antshare has been trading a lot since a while, seemingly because of a recent hype, a cool techno behind and the current meeting. There is then a high volume. But what makes exactly this volume (and most of other markets): ar they real people actually trying to bet on price, or High-Frequency/automatised trading only ?
