How would I know I sent crypto to the wrong address?

Sent about $1,000 worth of ETH from Coinbase to bittrex three hours ago and it's still showing as "pending" in my ETH Wallet on Coinbase. I went ahead and sent $15 worth of ETH thirty minutes ago from Coinbase to bittrex again seeing if maybe it was delayed but it made it to my wallet on bittrex with no issues.

If I made the mistake of sending it to a different wallet (BTC for example) or mistyped the wallet address (which I never type, always copy paste) would it forever show "pending" or would it show "sent" like every other transaction that was completed?
