Did bittrex mess up?

A friend of mine had an issue on this exchange and has not received any feedback. His altcoins were sold for btc and one of the btc's got transfered to an address he does not recognize. They sent him an email authorization and he mistakenly clicked confirm. Then another 1.6 btc's were trying to be withdrawn and he denied that. What could have happend first for his altcoins to be sold in the crash market. He lost money with that and is there anyway to find out the whole story?
