What's a proper index for crypto

For some time I used coinmarketcap (CMC) as a reference to how my investments fare in crypto. If I beat CMC I was doing well, and if CMC beat me I was doing bad. Then it occured to me that this is obviously a flawed reference point as I'm then comparing my portfolio to an ever growing pool of coins. So instead I'm now looking for a reasonable index. I've created one which is the top 6 coins as of jan 1st 2017, but this is probably a bit thin. Are there currently any reasonable indexes out there?
