Question about trading fee on exchange

Newbie question:

lets say i want to buy something to speculate short term on an exchange for 10 dollar (in btc). the btc transaction fees are ~40 dollar right now or so...how does it work then? or are there no transaction fees for trading somethign on exchange except the (for example ) kraken 0.19 % fee?
