ICO price vs exchange price?

I'm thinking about investing in an ICO. I wonder if there is any real advantage. Do most just dump as soon as it hits the exchange? It looks like a lot of ICO's spike, then dip. So, unless the plan is to dump it asap, hodlrs might be better off just buying later on an exchange?
