Buying multiple coins

I'm going to start investing and want to build a portfolio with BTC, ETH and a few strong altcoins. I have already purchased some BTC through coinbase and I know the best way to buy alts is through an exchange using BTC. My question is would it be best to buy ETH and BTC straight from coinbase or buy one and get the other through an exchange?
