ShapeShift only works if using hard wallet?

Hello, I can never get ShapeShift to work but I try it Coinbase/gdax and bittrex accounts. Should I be doing it with a hard wallet account instead where I’m holding the private keys instead? Would that have something to do with it? Thanks
