Beginner question: How do you earn money on Hodl or Trading? What is the equation

Lets say I invested 10 USD on Btc and then afterwards its price rises up 5%, will my 10 USD worth of Btc rise the same way making the equation 10 USD + 5% = 10.5 USD?
