Are all wallets created equally?....

As with many, I am in the process of learning everything I can about everything crypto. Can someone help me understand wallets?

1) you need a separate wallet for each kind of cryptocurrency, right? 2) What is the difference between a wallet on Coinbase vs. a Wallet on Bittrex vs. a wallet that you download and keep on your computer? (I think this is a thing) vs. a Hardware wallet?

Is any one safer than the other? Or are any of these not technically a "wallet"?

Or if anyone has their own quick summary or reference to link me to that'd be much appreciated as well!
